Thrill
In the quiet tapestry of Scripture, the word "thrill" is rarely spoken in our modern sense, yet its essence—the shivering touch of the divine, the skip of a heart in wonder, and the rush of holy joy—pulses through every page. To be thrilled in a biblical context is to be deeply moved or pierced by the reality of God's presence, moving beyond simple emotion into a state of spiritual resonance.
The Thrill of Radiant Joy
In the biblical sense, a thrill is often a physical response to a spiritual blessing. It is the feeling of a heart "enlarging" or expanding as it takes in the vastness of God’s goodness. When we witness the restoration of what was lost or the fulfillment of a promise, the soul experiences a radiant, tremulous excitement.
"Then you shall see and be radiant, and your heart shall thrill and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you." (Isaiah 60:5)
The Thrill of Awe and Reverence
The Bible also associates "thrilling" with a holy dread—not a fear that pushes us away, but a profound awe that pulls us to our knees. It is the "shiver" of the soul when it realizes the sheer scale of the Creator's power. Whether it is the wind obeying His voice or the earth trembling at His touch, these moments pierce our routine and remind us of the majesty of the Divine.
"You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand." (Psalm 16:11)
The Thrill of the Unseen
Perhaps the most soothing form of this thrill is the one that comes through faith. It is the "unspeakable and glorious joy" that vibrates within a believer who, though they cannot see Christ with their eyes, feels His presence with their spirit. This is a quiet, sustaining thrill—a steady heartbeat of hope that remains even when the world is loud.
"You never knew him, but you love him; for the moment you do not see him, but you believe in him, and you will thrill with an unspeakable and glorious joy." (1 Peter 1:8)
A Life Moved by Spirit
To live a life "thrilled" by God is to remain spiritually fervent and zealous. It is to allow the "thrill of the pen" or the "thrill of the voice" to be directed by the Holy Spirit. It is the exquisite sensation of being used for a purpose greater than oneself, where every fiber of our being is tuned to the music of God's grace.
"Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." (Romans 12:11)
